What On Earth Is Feng Shui?
Using
Light in Feng Shui
Let’s take a quick look at what Feng Shui
is so that you mind is refreshed on the basic principles. Feng
Shui is an ancient practice based on art and science principles
whose goal is to balance the Chi (universal energy) in your
life. The most popular look at Feng Shui is through the use
of decorative elements such as color, textures, plants, furniture
and even sound and light to create a totally harmonious balance
of energy.
Keep energy in mind because Feng Shui principles are based
on trying to keep a balance of positive energy in a space,
whether it is a home, office or other area. Do you know what
the biggest demonstration of energy is? The answer is light.
Light is energy itself and everything reacts to it. Your body
recognizes changes in light as in night and day. Plants need
light in order to live just as much as animals do. Every thing
is made up of energy so it stands to reason that light will
play the largest part in the practice of Feng Shui.
Incorporating
light is perhaps one of the first and easiest things you
can do if you are trying to balance the Chi in a
living or work space. Sunlight, either through a window or
sky light is optimal as it is natural and nourishing to all
living things. If you have heard of people getting depressed
in the winter time, it is based on the fact that there is less
sunlight during that time. So there are many scientific studies
that bear out the fact that sunlight affects energy levels.
Cool
fluorescent white lights can have detrimental effects
on Chi if exposed for too long. The same principle applies
to artificial pink lights too. The quality of light definitely
can create negative Chi in a space. Warm lighting from strategically
places lamps and light fixtures can work wonders for a room.
Full spectrum lights are another Feng Shui option.
It is important to note that mirrors can help boost the energy
level in a room exponentially because of its reflective properties.
If you have a room that is getting natural sunlight from only
one window or light source, placing a mirror where it can capture
some of the sun’s rays to reflect it into the room is one Feng
Shui decorating trick.
Perhaps the second best source of light when incorporating
Feng Shui principles is color. Color is just variations of
reflected light so choosing the right colors can definitely
energize a room. And if you have followed some Feng Shui principles,
you should know that each of the five elements offers up different
color schemes which in turn affect different areas in your
life. Color has your second light source will make a huge impact.
How you use your lights also makes quite an impact on the
Chi in a room. Create a layered lighting system in your home
so that your body is not thrown into shock with the sudden
brightness of glaring lights in the bathroom or other areas
of the home. By slowly transitioning the light source from
dim to bright, you can save personal energy and work on a more
harmonious balance. Sheer curtains and window blinds are ways
to allow natural light in gracefully. Dimmer switches allow
you to adjust the strength of the light too.
Feng Shui is all about energy, so be sure that you carefully
choose the lighting sources in your home. Energy is light and
light is also color. Your choices will directly affect your
own energy as well as the energy in your living and work spaces.
Choose wisely and you will thrive in all areas of life from
health and wealth to a happy family and marriage.
